As part of National Community Health Center Week U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander spent an hour with us today visiting out East Side Medical & Dental Clinic. After a briefing about the evolving safety net in Middle Tennessee, Sen. Alexander enjoyed a tour and took the time to meet our patients and staff.
Our briefing with Sen. Alexander focused on the unique role we play at Neighborhood Health. We take seriously the “community health” part of being a community health center. That’s why we expend so much effort fighting hepatitis A, measles, hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, opioid use disorder, and other public health threats.
We keep not only our patients but also our wider community healthy. (And we are growing in response to the need: Stay tuned for the announcement of our new location in South Nashville!) Sen. Alexander was full of questions about all of this – and he was clearly impressed with the Neighborhood Health dentists and doctors he met.
Sen. Alexander chairs the powerful Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, where he is a forceful advocate for a 5-year extension of funding for community health centers. We are so grateful for his efforts to secure this 5-year extension, which enables us to do work with patients we love. This funding, and our work together, have such a large impact on the lives of the more than 30,000 patients we serve. Thanks to the continuing work of Sen. Alexander and his colleagues, this impact will continue to be felt all across Nashville and Middle Tennessee.
Thank again to Sen. Alexander for taking time out to pay us a visit!
